E-bike Updates

actions Walnut Creek is taking to close the gap:

  • State & Regional Coordination

    • The State of California commissioned an e-bike safety study, targeted for completion in October.

    • Walnut Creek is coordinating with nearby cities, Contra Costa County, and the State to develop strategies and regulations for safe e-bike operation.

    • City Council will discuss e-bike safety during an October meeting.

    • Council will also review an ordinance to limit e-bikes in open space to Class 1 bikes.

    • The City will continue to track — and potentially influence — statewide legislation.

  • Police Department Actions

    • Hosted a “Bike Rodeo” in July to raise bike safety awareness for children and parents.

    • Conducted an E-bike saturation patrol in August (downtown, 4–10pm, Friday).

      • Involved 3 traffic officers and 3 drone operators (standby if anyone fled).

      • Primary objective: education.

  • Citywide Educational Efforts

    • A cross-functional group (City Manager’s Office, Police Department, Public Works) is developing an educational campaign.

    • Campaign will be shared through traditional media and social media.

    • Plans are underway to engage with schools.
